Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and non-verbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Autism affects an estimated 1-36 children and 1-45 adults in the United States.

Autism looks different for every individual. Each person has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. While some speak others may not or be limited in verbal communication. Some have intellectual disabilities and some may not. Some will require significant support in their daily lives, while others need less support and in some cases grow up and live independently.

  • On average, Autism is diagnosed around the age of 5 in the US with signs appearing by age 2-3.
  • Autism is 4x's more prevalant in boys than girls
  • ASD is one of the fastest growing developmental disorder in the United States
  • Around 75 million people have autism. That is 1% of the world's population
  • ASD occurs in all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups
  • Current diagnostic guidelines in the DSM-5 break down the ASD diagnosis in three levels based on the amount of support the individual may need.
    • Level 3 - Requiring very substantial support.
    • Level 2 - Requiring substantial support.
    • Level 1 - Requiring support

TYPICAL SYMPTIONS MAY INCLUDE:

  • Lack of or poor eye contact
  • Lack of or significantly delayed speech
  • Various self-stimulatory behaviors such as hand flapping, rocking, spinning or other repetitive behaviors
  • Covering ears with hands
  • Difficulty in socializing with other children
  • Insistence on sameness; resists change in routine
  • Inappropriate laughing and giggling
  • No real fear of dangers
  • Sustained odd play
  • Apparent insensitivity to pain
  • Echolalia (repeating words or phrases in place of normal language)
  • Preference to be alone; aloof manner
  • May not want cuddling or act cuddly
  • Not responsive to verbal cues (may include his/her name)
  • Fascination with spinning objects
  • Inappropriate attachment to objects
  • Difficulty in expressing needs; uses gestures or leading others instead of words
  • Noticeable physical over-activity or extreme under-activity
  • Tantrums - displays extreme distress for no apparent reason
  • Unresponsive to normal teaching methods
  • Uneven gross/fine motor skills (may not want to kick a ball but can stack blocks.)
  • Get upset by minor changes
  • Must follow certain routines
  • Have unusual reactions to the way things sound, smell, taste, look or feel
