Gluten Free/Casein Free Diet

The Gluten Free/Casein Free Diet is just what it sounds like: Removing all Gluten and Casein from the diet. Easier said than done, but well worth it to many families.

The theory behind this diet is to remove those foods which aggravate the "leaky gut syndrome" (microscopic pinholes in the intestine that allow not fully digested peptides or proteins from gluten and casein to leak out into the system. The anti-bodies being manufactured by the body are what, this theory claims, upset neurons and certain brain functions).

Gluten is a protein found in grains including wheat, rye, oats and barley. Casein is milk protein. These two products are very common in cereal grain and milk products...pretty much everything a typical American child eats. However, reports from parents who have tried this diet are astounding. Many of them have seen almost miraculous improvement in their child's symptoms. Improvements have been seen in behavior, socialization, language ability as well as many other areas. These improvements make this diet a popular option especially since it does not involve the use of prescriptions or other medical interventions.

Other families have opted to move on to the SCD Diet which removes those ingredients which aggrevate the gut in an effort to heal it. Still other families have seen better results with focusing on an allergy elimination diet. It just depends on the child.
